Roto-Disc, Inc. remains focused on continuous improvement and product innovation. Your industrial processes might benefit from a lighter-weight spherical valve versus a heavy-duty spherical valve.
Read more of our guide to see if our Roto-Disc®II lighter-weight spherical valves will work for your industrial processes.
Overview of Roto-Disc
Roto-Disc, Inc. designs and manufactures spherical valves and airlocks, as well as clean-flow diverters for industrial processes that handle dry and slurry material. We cater to hundreds of industries around the globe.
Customization options and precision engineering are key components of our product offering. Our customers typically need a solution that can withstand abrasive and demanding material in harsh chemical environments and a wide range of temperatures. We can design a valve for your process that fits your requirements while saving you money by decreasing direct maintenance costs and reducing or eliminating downtime.
We have been in business for more than 40 years and have thousands of successful installations. All products are designed and manufactured in the United States, meaning your purchase supports American jobs.
What Is the Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valve?
The Roto-Disc®II lighter-weight spherical valve has the same essential features as the original Roto-Disc® spherical valve. The main difference is that it has a lighter-weight body design and an outlet opening and flange that matches the valve size.
The pressure range for this valve is a full vacuum to 50psig below the valve and full vacuum to one bar above the valve. Temperature ranges go from -40°F to 1200°F (-40°C to 650°C), so these are similar temperature ranges to our heavy-duty spherical valve. Sizes range from 3 inches to 24 inches for inlet openings.
Industries That Benefit From Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves
Lightweight spherical valves are widely used in food and beverage manufacturing lines for easy cleaning and sterilization, as well as in the bottling or filling processes due to the need for quick and precise flow control. Again, the lighter-weight valves can open and close more efficiently.
Industries that could benefit from this valve include:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Food processing
- Metal and mining
- Paper and pulp
- And more
Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves vs. Similar Valves
If your company uses gate valves, globe valves, diaphragm valves, butterfly valves, or check valves, for dry material handling applications, Roto-Disc®II lighter-weight spherical valves offer significant advantages.
Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves vs. Gate Valves
Lighter-weight spherical valves are easier to operate, require only a quarter-turn for opening and closing, and are more compact. They’re also faster to actuate, making them ideal for applications where a quick shut-off is needed.
Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves vs. Globe Valves
Lighter-weight spherical valves are lighter and more efficient in space-constrained applications and are better for high-frequency on/off applications.
Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves vs. Butterfly Valves
Lighter-weight spherical valves generally provide a tighter seal, and allow material to flow unobstructed through the valve. In contrast, a butterfly valve has a vane directly in the middle of the flow-stream.
Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves vs. Diaphragm Valves
Our lighter-weight spherical valves have higher flow rates, easier actuation, and more versatility across a broader range of media. They also typically require less maintenance in general-purpose applications.
Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves vs. Check Valves
If you need full manual control, lighter-weight spherical valves allow full manual control, providing flexibility where user-determined flow control is necessary. This makes them more versatile in applications where quick manual shut-off is needed rather than relying on automatic operation.
Common Applications for Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves
There are several applications where a lighter-weight spherical valve is an important consideration for your processes.
Chemical Dispensing Units
In chemical hoppers, especially portable or mobile ones, lightweight spherical valves manage the safe dispensing of material without binding or jamming.
Food Processing Lines
Lightweight spherical valves are frequently used to discharge or fill ingredients from blenders, vacuum dryers, and centrifuges. These valves allow quick, sanitary shut-off and precise portioning, which is ideal for high-speed packaging lines in production facilities focused on sanitation and efficiency.
Pneumatic Conveying Systems
These valves provide reliable, positive shut-off without adding excess weight, making them ideal replacements for leaky, flimsy slide-gate valves.
Benefits of Roto-Disc®II Lighter-Weight Spherical Valves
These valves have the same essential features as our heavy-duty spherical valve but with a lighter weight.

Lighter-Weight Body Design
If you have portable equipment and weight is a factor, a lighter-weight design can achieve optimal flow without adding excess weight to your equipment. These are ideal when creating modular production lines or if you change out equipment to make various products.
